Any differences, prior to sign up?
So far I've used archive.org for backup and online access.
Probably there should be an alternative that can be handed over
at some point...

The features of github and gitlab are quite similar, at least at the basic usage level. I have not explored the CI (continuous integration) features so cannot comment on that. Go ahead and register an account with both github and gitlab, so that you can see/compare their ease of use firsthand.
