How to resize PUP Control's window?

Post by Clarity »

PUP Control has been included in PUPs for many years. It is useful and a great guide for reaching the OS's features.

It is designed around a concept of buttons to get to its features.

But, it has a problem that has been with PUPs for years: Its screen is static and cannot be expanded or size dragged to accommodate what a user would want to see. It does have a slider that does work, but for some uses, it an advantage to being able to see more/all of the entries for a given button when the desktop real-estate allows.

I see in its Help that it is supported by someone named Roger D. Grider. Is there a way to get a message to him for a review of the static window size and ask for a change to allow the screen to be dragged to a resize by any use?

The current implementation is not broken, rather the ability to resize cripples. Also, see next post to this thread

Thanks in advance

BTW: Pup Control on @peebee's S15PUP64 has a "Window Manager Settings" icon that does not open its item.

sk for a change to allow the screen to be dragged to a resize by any use?

Most window managers allow windows to be dragged
by holding the alt key and dragging the window with the mouse.
Dragging with the right mouse button might be configures to do something else.
And dragging with the middle mouse button with the alt key held down may do something else.

And you can drag almost anywhere on the window
so you can easily drag the window
to access the upper part of the window
and to access the lower part of the window.

It is not a problem at all, for most window managers.
It is the WM that does this.

In MS Windows, you can't drag it past a side of the screen,
and if you can drag it to see the rest if the window, that part of the window that was off screen will be blank

With Linux you can.

Hope you got what I am sharing: You cannot resize the Control Panel's window using your mouse in the same way as you can with other Linux/PUP windows; like ROX.

That might not have come across clearly in my post.

It is the WM that does this.

The problem is that the author of PupControl has set the window to resizable=false and JWM honors this request. There is no way to resize or maximize the window.

Yes I think I understand.

There are windows that you probably don't want to resize.

A window has properties like default size, whether it should be resizable or not etc
which are set by the programmer.
Whether a window manager respects the programmer's settings or not is another matter.

Linux draws the entire window. You can see all parts of a window by dragging the window up and down and left or right.

MS Windows does not let you drag a window past the edge of the screen.
There is an application that allows you to drag a window past the screen edges using the alt key with the mouse.
But the part of the window hidden because it is past the screens edge is usually blank.
For example the "cancel" and "OK" will not be there.

Linux draws the whole window and the WM usually allows you to get at the whole window by holding the alt key down while dragging anywhere on the window.

I use dwm (sucksless). I press alt+M to automatically maximize all windows. Like this rox window.
these screenshots are pictures of my entire screen.

This is the mouse/keyboard window, which dwm automatically maximizes.
Which is really not desirable.
I can prevent that by pressing alt+F to prevent it automatically maximizing the window.
Or i can configure dwm to not maximize that window by default.
You probably don't want to maximize the mouse wizard.

If you want to change the size of a window like the mouse wizard,
you can edit the source, and rewrite it.

@williams2 That's why this thread was opened...To get this review to the AUTHOR for his review.

Hopefully it will get to him, someone will alert him, or I will find some way to get a message to him/her.

Thanks, though, for your comments.

@Clarity,

Yes, a resizable PupControl GUI is possible but it will require a significant change in the parameters that control horizontal positioning of text and icons, while still retaining the current GUI layout. The next release should be available in a couple of days.

Thanks

Thanks. Being a PUP staple, I am sure it will surface, most noticeably, in those new PUPs coming out of WoofCE consistent with PUP directions.

Thanks for considering if a review was in order.

Also, of note (I KNOW this is not produced by ControlPanel) but I think an option is in order for a hardware/software Microphone testor. ControlPanel has options for camera test and sound test, but no microphone test. Not sure if a feature should be added.

Thanks @radky for what you've done with this and your other works.
