PuppEX Focal64 Linux Live DVD with kernel 5.16.2-exton and VirtualBox Guest Additions :: Build 220201

Post by exton »

ABOUT PuppEX Focal64 BUILD 220201
This Puppy derivative is built from Puppy Linux 9.5 FossaPup64. I have added PCManFM and LXterminal. Also many development tools. Furthermore I have compiled a new kernel – 5.16.2-exton and pre-installed VirtualBox Guest Additions. Watch a screenshot when PuppEX is running in full screen in VirtualBox: https://puppex.exton.net/puppex-220201/ ... 220201.jpg

PuppEX Focal64 (both versions) are compatible with Ubuntu 20.04 ("Focal Fossa"), which means that Ubuntu packages for Ubuntu 20.04 LTS can be installed and used in PuppEX. Ubuntu 20.04 LTS will be supported until April, 2025.

Hello @exton You may want to extend an explanation of the "tip" of this xbox... OR eliminate it.

It is for full screen in VirtualBox. Press Execute then.

Remove the script from /etc/xdg/autostart. (vboxclient).

Hi exton

I get download it you PuppEX Focal64 Build 220201. and it works very fast, it has a very good look, derivative of FossaPup64 and I like FossaPup64 and with kernell 5.16 .. :thumbup2:

With the included QT5, Glade, GCC-9 compiler, with git, svn and more .... good.

Internet connection WiFi without any problem and fast.

The same Clarity show in his desktop screen I occur to me that the Sound Mixer icon does not appear.
But running Alsamixer by selecting the sound card already appeared the icon in the taskbar.

I have not had problems to boot system but if I have problems closing the system, i didn't create the PUPSAVE directory correctly the system was hanging.

It create a file only one Fossapup64Save-XXX file of only 19 MB, despite this, it seems that everything works correctly. Most of the usual PUPPY programs work well.

But when I close the system it does not close it well and it is hanging, I have to see why that happens.

Ok exton thanks for you distribution .

Regards

As noticed, my prior post was booting the ISO file via QEMU.

This time, A bare-metal test is performed.

Findings:

  1. Booted the ISO file directly from SG2D USB, pristine.

  2. AT PUP's Menu, Added "psave=sda2:/Sessions" to its Linux-line.

  3. Earlier mentioned, the 'vbox...' message on pristine's desktop

  4. Also there is the filemanager window; this and vbox are a departure from FossaPUP64

  5. Closing each, FirstRUN emerges for pristine tailoring

  6. Ran FirstRUN and "HAPPY" to see this being one of the very few PUP/DOGs that correctly list the timezone

  7. I checked the checkbox for "time from the internet"

  8. Changed the HOSTNAME in FirstRUN

  9. and upon OK completing FirstRUN.

After internet time window completed, the desktop restarted and things progress similar to normal FossaPUP64.

Tested multimedia use and tested samba utilities ie. findsmb, smbclient, etc: No issues with these subsystems

Other Issues/observations in this pristine operation:

  • The system DID NOT start the Ethernet LAN service, as expected

  • The taskbar does not show either the audio (already reported) icon nor the expected LAN icon.

Upon shutdown, the SAVE-SESSION was saved in a "/Sessions" folder on the USB versus the expected sda2 which Is in the psave option entered at system start although the foldername provided to store the session file was correct. Thus it showed /Sessions/...save to be placed on sdb2, the USB where the Puppex ISO file is stored.

Shutdown proceeded normal with message indicating it successfully stored the save on the USB properly.

On reboot

  1. Same procedure as before booting the ISO file from the SG2D USB

  2. At the Puppex Menu edited the same 1st line to add psave=sdb2:/Sessions/

  3. Puppex finds its save and uses it to complete to desktop with all prior changes intact including the LAN adapter assignment.

  4. Taskbar icons remain missing

Thanks for your test report.

I'm thinking of a new PuppEX version. This time with UEFI support. I still don't know why PuppEX Build 220201 won't boot in UEFI mode.
