Forum Email links variable behaviour?

Post by peebee »

Why do some links in emails to forum topics trigger a forum login page whereas some lead straight to the logged in topic??

e.g. https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=4688&e=1&view=unread#unread leads to login - reply by bigpup

https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=4688&e=1&view=unread#unread opens logged in topic - reply by fredx181

difference is the www.

why are different links generated??

Here what is happening is the URL www.forum.puppylinux.com login status cookie is different than the login status cookie forum.puppylinux.com creates. So they are seen as two completely different URLS, that point to the same place.

I can review our cookie settings but I must remind everyone sometimes it's better to leave sleeping dogs alone. I've experimented a lot with the cookie settings and 90% of them caused major login logout problems.

We use some tricky url rewrites to preserve being able to use old forum links (murga-linux.com) in the current scheme of things.

I'll review the settings again. Although I can personally live with the 2 domain name styles using separate cookies

Thanks @rockedge .....

Any idea why some notification emails use the www. domain whilst others don't? e.g.

Code: Select all

@peebee I will look into finding where I can adjust that URL generation to remove the "www" from them. That can be the answer to what is going on there. Also any email address with somebody@puppylinux.com can only send mails out but can not receive any mails because Micko01 has the main puppylinux.com website pages on GitHub which we redirect to. This is causing a certificate problem on our home server when it comes to anything with the straight domain name. This is because we can't issue a certificate for our home server because the web site is physically on GitHub machines, while the forum, oldforum and Wikka work just as expected because they reside physically on our home server and can receive valid certificates for SSL.
