Puppy is deleting my windows network settings! (Solved)

Post by pesterian »

I'm very new to Linux so please excuse any misconceptions on my part :?

TLDR: I boot puppy off a usb drive onto a machine that has windows installed and anytime I set up the network modules windows forgets all my network settings and saved networks.

yapping: I don't have the privilege of having my own personal computer so recently I downloaded fossapup64 onto a usb drive using rufus and I've been using it mostly on the house's lenovo thinkpad (neofetch image attached). The problem is anytime I load the module lwifi so I can connect to wifi on puppy it for some reason deletes all my network settings and saved networks on windows. What's the reason for this? Can I stop it and if so how? And please explain it like you would to a five year old because although I try to stay informed I'm not the best with Linux. Thank you! :D

(below I've attached my system info in both puppy and windows)

When you shut down Windows, do you hibernate it or fully shut it down?

I shut it down. Sometimes I restart it when someone else has been using it and boot puppy. Why does it matter though?

Go do a search on Windows hibernate and read about how it works.
Basically hibernate does not fully release control of computer.
So you boot another OS and it is not in complete control of the computer.

Look up how to make sure you shutdown Windows normally full shutdown and not in hibernate.
There are settings in Windows to control this.

Make sure you are booting Fossapup64 from a completely powered off/on condition.

Your image shows Fossapup64 9.0 as the OS.

The latest version is Fossapup64 9.5.

Where did you get the Fossapup64 ISO?

Check the name of the Fossapup64 ISO you downloaded and make sure it is Fossapup64 9.5

If you do actually have Fossapup64 9.0.
That was an alpha early release version that was full of bugs and was released for finding issues and bugs to fix.
Which did get fixed in later releases.

What you are describing is something I have never seen reported on this forum.
Non of the settings made by Puppy Linux, should affect anything but settings in programs in Puppy.

Maybe telling us what specifically you do to make a network connection setup in Fossapup64, will be a clue to what is happening.

What specific version of Windows OS?

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

I tried shutting down windows entirety and powering on my machine before booting puppy again and my network settings weren't affected so I guess restarting was the issue.

Also I downloaded the fossapup iso from the main link on the puppy page.
