No sound from FF in Fossa 9v5. (abandoned)

Post by cobaka »

ABANDONED.
Now trying a new approach in a new thread.
In short I downloaded firefox: menu -> setup -> default applications chooser.
The result: FF loads, runs but without sound. I will start a new thread, as I am now using firefox from a diff't directory on my PC.

  • - - everything below is history - - -

Overall problem to be solved. Sound from files on HDD, no sound from Firefox.

Context:
My desktop PC is called 'Mobius'.
HDD on Mobius failed to boot several days ago.
At that time I ran uPupBB-64 by PeeBee.

Decision: replace uPupBB with Fossa.
Action: Puppy Linux (Fossa) installed on another HP desktop (to HDD).
Installation method: MikeSLR's 'manual installation using ROX'. <- always works!
HDD transferred from HP to Mobius - and Mobius (a very faithful PC) booted as expected.

Result: OS installed was FossaPup 9.5 (with Tas. tiger under a pink moon).
Distro: fossapup64 9.5
Installation - looks good. I see the HDD. I see the desktop. I think god loves me.

But Fossa9.5 has only PaleMoon Browser and PM is acting up (a little).
Decision: Install/run Firefox.
Firefox (v 122.0.1) is in /mnt/home (ie SDA3)
From FireFox: 122.0.1 Firefox Release, February 6, 2024
Version 122.0.1, first offered to Release channel users on February 6, 2024

I copied FF to that directory from another place. (Can't remember, but perhaps from a working copy - probably on Mobius).
FossaPup 9.5 is in /mnt/home/SYSTEM (ie SDA3)
SDA1 is BOOTLOADER - installed using GRUB4DOS. 48MiB - FAT32.

Firefox runs - I'm posting to the forum from Firefox. now. today. at this moment in time.
I have no sound from FF I have sound from MP3 files on my HDD.

More into about running/installing FF.
(1) See screengrab #1, where I show files in /mnt/home/firefox/
(2) See screengrab #2 where I show the Puppy menu, where FF is absent.
(3) To start FF I must open /mnt/home/firefox and click on "firefox" 5336 bytes.
(4) Below: see report from PSI about sound and sound card.

Rebooting does not solve my problem.

Help appreciated.
Hope I put all the relevant info in this posting!

ScreenGrab #1 showing folder where FF 'lives'.

ScreenGrab #2 - does not exist. When menu is active - screengrab (printscreen key) is inactive.
All I see is Seamonky and PaleMoon. No Firefox.

Here is info from PSI about sound:

Additional observation from FF web.
I asked for the latest version - answer was v122 BUT looking more closely v124 appears to be the latest.
Don't understand this, but I don't think my problem stems from FF version.

Try using @OscarTalks apulse package:

apulse-0.1.13

@Jasper
The journey so far:

Jasper suggested: Get apulse from Oscar Talks.
Action: Did that. Bash told me I installed apulse:
Me: Which aPulse? bash: -> /usr/bin/apulse
I conclude: apulse is installed.

Then:

root#
apulse /mnt/home/FireFox/firefox/firefox <cr>

I may take some time to understand what's going on here.
On this forum there is a complete thread on this topic by Oscar; I'm only generally familiar with bash and even less familiar with Linux.
I haven't digested the info in the thread mentioned in the prev. sentence.
I think god still loves me, but not a lot at the moment.

A second thought:
I think I'm chasing a possum up the wrong tree.
I think I should forget the firefox I have and just use menu > setup > puppy packet manager > firefox (-install-)

What do you say @Jasper to this wild-eyed idea?
I believe I am running a version of FF at the moment without proper connection to expected links.
That's the idea of some-one (me) who lacks any concept of dependencies (etc).
I'm just (I think) running a binary from the directory in which it resides.

I would suggest using one of mikewalsh's portables. This normally has everything included which your system may need and is also self-contained.
