Re: Second icon in Menu

I checked what would cause a second icon to appear in start menu (see image)
and I discovered a way to duplicate the action.

I installed ptmtimer 3.4 SFS as instructed
-turn off networking at bottom of tray and run SFSget app
-I clicked on 'New' button accidentally.
I normally click on 'Existing' or 'Main' button

-I probably continued to work by using bootmanager to load the SFS in the Main window
This results in two icons - one works properly and the other doesn't

You can delete ptmtimer-easy in Easy Containers (Menu, files section). This will remove the installation as "New" container, not the installation inside the kirkstone container.
Then remove ptmtimer.ec-desktop and ec-ptmtimer.desktop from /usr/share/applications,
Finally execute fixmenus and relaunch JWM (or reboot)

PS : you don't have to turn off networking to install a local SFS

sfsget app does require turning of networking but the bootmanager app could probably be used ???
and it doesn't the turning off of networking

I like to use sfsget since it's the official way --> BarryK told me to use it

I always use sfsget to install a sfs (even local sfs) and do not turn off the network. You had probably to stop the network for a specific case.

For anyone who has an installation of Easy from before usr-merge, and has been updating since then, the "kirkstone" container has some bugs. Fixed:

https://bkhome.org/news/202312/usr-merg ... ainer.html

usr-merge folder hierarchy was introduced with Easy 5.5. There were still some issues, fixed in later releases. Issues keep getting discovered, now this latest one, that will be fixed in Easy 5.6.5.

odd behaviour

Post by don570 »

I did a lot of testing of my app ptmtimer and I discovered two things that I should mention.

1) In the unusual situation that two consecutive versions of SFS app has been dragged to kirkstone folder
i.e. ptmtimer 3.4 SFS and ptmtimer 3.5 SFS

then getsfs app can handle this situation by ticking the appropriate box
however if bootmanager is used to install the SFS then the lower version will be loaded at boot time.
The message in the boot screen is that ptmtimer.sfs is loaded - no mention of the version.
When I launch ptmtimer from start menu then version 3.4 launches.

2) I tried an experiment to use Easyshare app in kirkstone container rather than Main container.
A fresh frugal install.
Easyshare app tried to set up SAMBA server . The screen message was left up for at least 10 minutes.
When I came back to computer to see what had happened I discovered that my Ethernet router had crashed and needed to be reset
Obviously bad!
So it appears that Easyshare app should only be used when in the Main container only.

Good day, everyone. When loading an SFS other than Kirkstone, I was receiving a "File doesn't exist or I can't access is: /usr/bin/ec-chroot-bookworm" (as an example). It seems they started to work over time. It this a part of a setup process that takes time to work properly on a new install? Same issue with the Fossapup and Buster.

I supposed that I should mention I'm using the latest EasyOS (5.6.4).

Thanks for your time,

Booted EASY in a VM. When it get to a point where it should be popping into its desktop, if stops with an indication that xorgwizard is required. Entering that the oNLY option it provides which works is 'vesa'. I allow xorg to determine the desk's resolution. This carries to a desktop after its test.

Here is the QEMU stanza I am using> This stanza allows both LAN utilties to run and sound to emerge in the host from the VM when appropriate apps/youtube is used.

Anyone can replicate booting the IMG file directly to desktop using this. It boots EASY with 2 disks, one for storage while another is for SWAP:

Code: Select all

qemu-system-x86_64 -name "Boot EASY IMG file" -enable-kvm -m 2048 -smp 2 -vga std -device AC97 -net nic -net user -rtc base=localtime -hda easy-5.6.5-amd64.img -hdb QEMUdisks/vHDD.img -hdc QEMUdisks/vSWAPPAGE.img

Performance is native!

Interesting observation
Boot Ventoy USB in the VM and launched EASY. EASY goes "directly" to desktop without issues with the appropriate expected resolution.

Code: Select all

qemu-system-x86_64 -name "Boot EASY from Ventoy" -enable-kvm -m 2G -smp 2 -vga std -device AC97 -net nic -net user -rtc base=localtime -hda /dev/sdg -hdb QEMUdisks/vHDD.img

Performance is excellent, while seemingly much more responsive so it seems.

Just updated to ver. 5.6.5 , posting this from desktop. I confirm that there are no problems: the Nvidia SFS gets loaded as expected from the desktop. Everything works, even audio through HDMI. I only had to install the new version of the devx sfs file. I also appreciate the new look of the download window, it's for sure less intrusive.
I'll report if I discover any malfunction.

If you right click on the drive icon, you get an option to 'Mount by label'. None of my drives have labels so haven't been able to test. I'm not sure how it affects a drive that is already mounted though.

Duh... actually I'm on FatDog right now, so not sure if it is specific feature or not.

Just rebooted into Easy, and no, that option is not there sorry. Maybe there is another way.

Keyboard layout and nouveau driver

Post by don570 »

I tested EasyOS Kirkstone-series version 5.6.5
nvidia gt 1030 video board
frugal install

I booted my new install and nouveau was automatically chosen as video driver and 'us' keyboard layout chosen.
I now launched the mouse/keyboard app from start menu

I chose 'fr' keyboard layout and then restarted X as the app suggested.
However the screen remained in the console.
I noticed that I had to use the 'fr' keyboard layout in the console to type.
Typing 'xwin' didn't work, so I typed 'xorgwizard' instead
and chose 'nouveau'
This allowed me to return to the desktop. Good.

I tested with a text editor which type of keyboard layout I had now,
and qwerty was in use. I assumed that 'us' was my keyboard layout.

I checked my keyboard layout by looking at the file
/etc/keymap
and to my surprise it contained 'fr'

This explains why when I boot up I must use 'fr' keyboard layout to enter my password.
I assume this is some strange behaviour only found on desktop computers with an nvidia card.

review EasyOS 5.6.5

Post by don570 »

review EasyOS 5.6.5

1) I tried setting up a Samba server in the kirkstone container.
I was careful to shut off the previous share on my Chromebook.
and setting up the Samba server on my desktop went smoothly.
I transferred files to my Chromebook.
I could use the /share folder to transfer a file to Main container.
Previously in version 5.6.5 my Ethernet router had crashed
but I hadn't checked to turn off my Chromebook share before launching easyshare.??

But I did notice one unusual thing ---> The Alt-F6 message on my kirkstone desktop image has vanished!!

2)
I noticed that pclock is included. It's a good app, but I noticed one thing wrong.
It assumes a sound is installed to allow the countdown ---> beep_high.wav and it's not apparently installed (see image)
I couldn't find it? The alarm worked fine because it uses another sound file.

Upgrade from 555 to 565

First problem found>

"Remove Builtin Packages" > Select package to remove
I can't seem to be able to type anything into the package box to shorten the selection process, and it only comes up with a full list when using the down arrow on the end of the box, and you need to up/down-arrow to select (it starts at the last 'z' package too). If by any chance you need to look elsewhere for the name (such as forgetting the spelling) you must start again. More than a little frustrating.

Upgrade from 555 to 565

Second problem found

Totally overwrite any text type files in /root, I had a number of my own application related config files under /root as well as associated directories, the directories are there still, but the individual config files are now gone.

I'm going to lunch and then see how bad the problems this upgrade has caused me.

It also seems to have re-enabled/re-added back-in a number of the EasyOS 'default' packages that I had "removed" in 555 (as they were unused and unwanted in the menu lists by me) using the Remove Builtin Packages Menu item. I haven't checked if their all back yet, but I suspect it's so.

Frugal install
EasyOS Kirkstone-series version 5.6.5
-nvidia proprietary video driver installed differently than when I installed it in EasyOS 564

-I booted up and reached the console rather than the desktop.
-I used 'xorgwizard' to choose the proprietary nvidia driver and then
typed 'xwin'

-the desktop was reached and works fine .Checked blender app.
Only problem so far was strange blinking of krita window when I tried various
appimages of krita paint program that I had. It still can be used, but blinking is noticeable.
I will download and try latest krita app.

As far as I can make out, beep_high.wav and beep_low.wav were in some older pups. I saw mention of them in LazyPuppy in the old forum.

I have revised the files in /usr/share/audio; have thrown out ivy.mp3 and illegal_move.ogg, and added beep_high.wav and beep_low.wav.

I got them from here:

All of those /usr/share/applications/default*.desktop files have "NoDisplay=true", which means they will be ignored and won't appear in the menu.
There is no need to remove them.

I am unable to reproduce this.

First, I looked at the code, to see if anywhere the files under /root might get deleted. Couldn't see any problem.

So, booted 5.5.5 on a usb stick, created various folders and text files under /root, then updated to 5.6.5.
All of the folders and files were still there after the update.

Your report that the folders are still there, but files missing, is weird.

Do you have a custom sfs loaded?

Another possibility is the drive is failing, causing filesystem corruption. Or a dodgy bit in the ram

Krita app - blinking window

Post by don570 »

When using Krita paint appimage I reported a blinking window.
I checked and found that this is related to nvidia proprietary video driver.
There something about OpenGL that isn't quite right in Easy OS
I was abe to stop the blinking by configuring Krita to not use 'acceleration'
which is easy to do by unticking box.(see image)
Note that there is no problem with 'nouveau' driver.
Note that I don't experience this problem with fatdog64.

I agree, but it's now happened twice with different hardware, firstly a core2-duo and secondly a relatively new AMD64 8 core and nothing seems odd or strange in any of the log files or onscreen so there is a cause somethere. Maybe there is a permissions or owner/group cause. I shall have a 2 machine side-by-side search after christmas when things settle down here.
