EasyEffects SFS running on a KLV-Airedale-RT using pipewire for audio which had a couple of components of EasyEffects installed but after I simply loaded on the fly the SFS it all worked out of the box. I Will insert the SFS now in to the frugal system root with a 2 digit prefix so it will load during system startup.

What's your current implementation of pipewire in KLV-airedale-RT. Is it @fredx181's sfs, or did you xbps-install it?

I was using the sfs, but recently removed and rolled back to do another squashed layer for other changes.

Now I'm wondering about doing a pipewire install on top layer.

Doesn't matter whilst experimenting, but since pipewire is maintained upstream and a core facility it makes sense to eventually incorporate it in the core build so upgrades keep it up to date. The only exception I could see to that would be if a much cut down version was possible via an sfs for the special case of trying to make an especially small distro.

However... I find big install-sized distros can run just as efficiently as bare metal boot distros. For example, I'm exploring (a FR initrd boot variant of) Garuda Sway to see how they polish it up and note, surprisingly, that the initial RAM it uses isn't really more than my very basic KLV_sway release; I need to double check that though.

However, @geo_c, read this for another case when 20pipewire (and far more besides) is a major plus of using FirstRib-based distros:

I used xbps-install to perform an actual installation of pipewire components and the 20pipewire.sfs is present and only contains the configuration files. The pipewire pieces are installed in the rootfs so the 20pipewire.sfs is very small containing only the parts for configuration to work in KLV-Airedale.

This way we are using the Void Linux repo packages that are the most recent stable versions with the advantage that pipewire is updated/upgraded regularly and will stay maintained :geek:
