How to get sound in Firefox?(solved)

Post by number77 »

Hello
I need to get sound in firefox but am a bit out of my depth trying to get sound on xenial64 on a dell e6230 on firefox.
I have firefox 88.0 64. Other browsers like pale moon and chrome do give sound but not firefox. I have installed apulse but no help.
Is there an easy to get sound working.
Help would be appreciated.
Thanks
number77

PS I need to use firefox as surfshark vpn has a plugin for firefox that is really easy to use, easier than vpn-start.

Need to start Firefox with:

Code: Select all

apulse firefox

for example, open /usr/share/applications/firefox.desktop in a text editor and change the Exec= line to read
Exec=apulse firefox.

Hello amethyst.
That does work well with an installed firefox, ver 88 but I need a later version.
Can your script work with a portable version of firefox. I have mike walshes portable ver 111 but your script does not find it.
Any ideas.

I don't use portable Firefox so now I'm playing the guessing game. Portables are located in /mnt/home (/inited/mnt/dev_save) normally and are launched with a script. Firefox needs paulseaudio which older Puppys do not have but apulse is a workaround to get sound with Firefox with older Puppys. So my guess is that your current portable launch script does not invoke apulse. You should be able to start Firefox and have sound without the portable launch script by using apulse followed by the full path of the firefox executable (which will probably be somewhere in /mnt/home or /initrd/mnt/dev_save) but then you will not have the benefit of the portable application. Otherwise my guess would be to edit the portable launch script and add apulse to the firefox executable line. You can also try to first run the apulse command and then run the portable launch script as is.

I have mike walshes portable ver 111

He usually makes the portable packages, with everything in them that is needed. Including what is needed for sound.

Using the launch script that comes in the portable package?

Are you saying you have tried it and there is no sound?

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

Dead right bigpup
I was trying to incorporate (apulse firefox) into portable firefox and didnt realise it was not required as sound worked.
Thanks for that and thanks again to mike walsh for his portables.
