I also think it is mistake to remove Rox. Really short sighted. No other file manager like it. Just as I feel about removing the Hiawatha web server.

Puppy (at least, Puppy releases that don't use an old package built years ago) uses a fork of ROX-Filer, https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/rox-filer.

It includes at least 2 important fixes:

https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/r ... 3380f723fe
https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/r ... ee728d5f2e

And, there's a fork of ROX-Filer with even more fixes at https://github.com/jun7/rox-filer.

So I'm back to developing my KLA-XFCEbase system, and the first hurdle I'm noticing is there is no print manager, or CUPS to be specific.

Has anyone got CUPS or sufficient printing running on this distro?

I will give it a go from pacman, but my experience trying to install CUPS and get it running in KLV-airedale was that it DIDN'T WORK, and I never could figure out why. Eventually @rockedge installed it and included it in a later RC, so I was spared the frustration figuring out what I was doing wrong. Basically I installed CUPS from OctoXbps and it was there, but I could never get the localhost:631 to show up.

install :

Code: Select all

pacman -U ./rox-2.11-7-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

Download:

I'm finally getting around to giving a rox install a go. I take it I just run this command from the directory where the package resides?

Well that was easy. Rox isn't very big, or installing from a local package is much faster, because it only took a few seconds.

Now I have Rox and Xfe file managers, of course all my portables which I'm using to post to this forum, and the difficult one I guess is going to be CUPS.

Once I can print this OS is off to the races.

Well, using command line pacman is really fun. It's fast and easy. I just installed:

midnight commander
ranger
neomutt
calcurse
newsboat
micro
lynx
elinks
w3m
mpd
ncmpcpp

EDIT, and now added:
lilypond
frescobaldi
ardour

everything works smoothly, easily, and all my linked config directories that are shared with KLV, jackalpup, fossapup, and F96 are integrated seamlessly. I'm really getting to like Arch. This system is almost completely loaded with what took months and years to do with the other OS's and that took a lot of compiling from source. And in Void I never did get Frescobaldi running after python updated to the latest version.

suprisingly there was no tilde text editor. But I'm really getting to like micro a lot better anyway.

So at the moment I can't think of anything else this system needs to be totally up to speed with my other OS's except for CUPS and a couple of more applications configs, namely getting mpd and ncmpcpp configured to find my music directories and play, and also neomuttrc needs to be configured along with a mailcap config, but other than that this OS is crankin.

Thanks @wiak for getting the /mnt/home links all squared away, because that makes configuring all these applications as simple as symlinking to a central directory on /mnt/home. Took me about a half hour to have all my daily applications installed and fully configured with bookmarks, colorschemes, etc.

Tomorrow when I'm fresh this KLA-XFCEbase-1.1 gets installed on my hard drives on all my laptops alongside KLV, jackalpup, and F96. Right now it's running from USB and is all setup with just one numbered upper_changes.

I imagine at this point I could write a script to install and link all this stuff from a fresh install and have it all done in one click. Maybe squash the whole thing into an sfs and have a read only system fully loaded.

just type: sudo pacman -Sy w3m
then: sudo pacman -Sy ranger
and here's ranger file manager with image previews in the terminal

@wiak @rockedge @Sofiya @fredx181 @Clarity and whoever else has been moving these Kennel Linux projects along, the world needs to know how much these Kennel Linux OS's ROCK!

ADDENDUM: And I think what's impressing me with KLA in comparison to KLV is the fact that several of these applications that I mentioned above were not the latest version in Void's repos, and therefore did not all match the configs that I had used in fossapup where I had compiled the latest versions from source. In the Arch repos everything seems to be up to date latest stable versions. And that made the setup extremely smooth for me.

I will install the Pamac package manager, see how it works, it suits me more. than " gnome-packagekit ".
I do not have a soul for gnome applications . I like app name beautiful app picture.the download size is visible, etc. On Arch I always had Pamac.
I'll have to find the time and build an ISO with "Pamac"

Looking at Thunar preferences in KLA-XFCEbase1.1 there is a missing dependency of gvfs, which notes that removable media will not work. But it appears to me that removable media is working just fine.

So is gvfs something really needed?

Below is a screenshot showing the message at the bottom.

@geo_c I have noticed this message a few times as well. Though gvfs is fully installed and working, Thunar reports it's not present but seems to work.

We'll look closer at this.

I installed that almost immediately using pacman. I don't know what I'd do without Xfe, it's really the most underated file manager out there. There's nothing it doesn't do, it runs on just about any system, and it's not gtk dependent. The theme is all internal. I have a collection of about 30 xferc files that are all different color and icon schemes.

I do notice on KLV-spectr that it does get a little buggy in list view when the windows are resized sometimes. The list details get garbled. Not anything that can't be reset by restarting it. And if the option is checked, it opens to the previously opened directories, which is how all my xferc files are configured.

@Sofiya It might just be the repo and mirrors are in an update. I have experienced this also and it happened yesterday trying a routine update of KLV-Airedale-RT. All kinds of errors, so I waited to try again which then worked after an hour or so.

This might not be the same thing and the FirstRib build script will need to be tested. I can try running an assembly from here.

To bad I can't read Cyrillic text  :ugeek: I should have had my friend Alexji from Murmansk teach me when we shared an apartment.

I ran with this version of the f_00 plug file. I got 2 errors for libnghttp3.so.9. This is a later version that is in my previous builds, which had libnghttp2.so14.26.0. This build does contain libhttp2.so.14.27.0. I didn't get any errors for libaudit.

installed pamac-aur-11.7.1-3 and updated my previously installed assembly KLA-XFCEbase-rc4.
the update went without problems, of course, since it was an old build, there were too many updates.
It's a pity that the new build is not going to happen . both KLA-OT2base and KLA-XFCEbase
