Dpup64 and Xenial64 boot and shutdown times differ

Post by number77 »

Hello
I have a Dell latitude E6230, i5 3340m, about 6gb ram.
I am wanting to change from Xenial64 to Bookwormpup64. Both run well but the boot and shutdown times of Bookwormpup64 are putting me off a bit. Xenial64 boots to wifi on in 24 secs, bookwormpup64 in 32 secs. Shutdown times are Xenial64 7 secs, Bookwormpup64 22 sec.
As I switch on and off often its a pain. Are these times to be expected.
Help and advice appreciated.
Thanks

What pupmode are you running them in?

Using a save or not using a save?

Are they both installed on the exact same drive?

To really test this, are you just booting to a working desktop, with every piece of hardware functional? (Monitor, keyboard, mouse or touchpad, WIFI, sound)
Then doing the shutdown?

BookwormPup64 10.0.6 is about double the size of Xenialpup64 7.5.
So that would make more to load into RAM on boot up.
Thus a little slower to get to desktop.
It does setup zram for swap. That takes a little time.
Xenialpup64 7.5 does not have or use zram swap.

Both installed to same partition different folders and frugal. Both use a save files and wifi and monitor setup and work. I haven't checked everything in Dpup. Not sure what you mean by pupmode but Xenial64 I have never changed modes.

I just added to my last post. Not sure you have read it.

If you are booting using a save. It has to be one of these pupmodes.

Pupmode is 12 or 13.

This does affect how the save is written to.

You can find info on pupmode being used in Pup-Sysinfo ->Sys-Files ->PupState

Pupmode 13 will take a little longer to shutdown if save has not very recently been updated.

Again are your speed tests based on booting to a working desktop and then doing a full shutdown?

I will look up pupmode. The other thing everything you mentioned (Monitor, keyboard, mouse or touchpad, WIFI, sound) work except sound, I haven't found sound yet.

BookwormPup64 is using Pulse audio for sound and it using a completely new program for setting up sound.

Right click on the tray speaker icon.

Select preferences

Select Output Devices Tab

Find the sound device you know should provide sound.

On the right side of it's listing is an icon with a green color check mark. (hover over it and it says set as fallback)
Click that to make that the device to use.

Yes speed tests to full desktop and wifi working as it is always last. And complete shutdown.

They are both on mode 12.

If both are running in Pupmode 12.

They should both be shutting down at about the same speed.

Shutdown does not need to update the save or really do anything but shutdown.

BookwormPup64 does do a little more of making sure drives are unmounted correctly, during the shutdown.

Could try a new clean install of BookwormPup64 10.0.6
Use fresh download of the BookwormPup64 ISO.
I have seen downloads not be 100% perfect, but still generally work, with little strange issues.

My install of BookwormPup64, running in pupmode 12, is taking very little time to shutdown.
But I am booting from an SSD, on a very new computer, with much faster hardware, than you have.

BookwormPup64 10.0.6 predates https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/woof-CE/pull/4272 and doesn't include this optimization of boot time. If a 10.0.7 is ever released, it should boot faster. I bet shutdown time can be reduced, too, but I haven't looked at this.

I may just put up with it as it does so much more.
I checked gtkhash of install iso and it was correct.
