Testing 08KLV-spectr-studio-rc2.sfs in KLV-Airedale

Post by rockedge »

So after accidentally adding the 08KLV-spectr-studio-rc2.sfs layer to a KLV-Airedale-RT-6.6.0-rt15 installation, by all indications seems to be working on the surface. Have not tested anything to any extent yet, but really like the new desktop look the system took on!

Well at first glance it seems logical that since the 08KLV-spectr-studio.sfs contains gtk3 ini and gtk 2, along with the specified gtk theme and icons, that Xfce had no trouble incorporating those. There's no polybar and that's to be expected! I suppose if the 08layer doesn't overwrite anything Xfce related, it should work fine. The other applications should also work since the underlying system is all KLV to begin with. What won't work is all the spectrwm keystrokes, polybar, or tiling, but I think everything else might be a go.

edit: operationally, that 08layer is adding pipewire-jack, applications, desktop files, and theme elements, along with the spectr configs and polybar configs, the latter being superflous. So you could just unsquash that layer and delete the /root/.config/spectrwm folder, /root/spectrwm.conf, and /root/.config/polybar folder, and it could serve as an 08KLV-airedale-studio.sfs.

That btw is exactly how my Airdale looks, I tend to use the theming I am currently jazzed about across the board in all KLVs and F96.

Does RT 15 have OBS?

I looked here for that ISO and do not see it.

And considering that it appears stable, should its name become "KLV-SpecTr Studio RT15-v6.1.38"

I use an appimage of OBS. Seems like a good approach. This studio is loaded big with applications. What I'm considering is an 09layer to add to the 08layer, and the 09 could contain portables and appimages of things like OBS, musescore4, deadbeef, and such. Makes more sense to run portables outside of the layered filesystem, but that takes effort on the part of the user, so a layer could also work. Or maybe just an sfs that gets loaded.

Also what we're looking at here isn't Spectr-studio, it's Airedale with the Spectr studio add on layer that happens to work!

Yes, my linux audio experience has never been so good as when we got this pipewire-jack stuff up and running. It's all smooth as glass. Of course each application might have it's own settings that need to be adjusted per use scenario.

So as Airedale goes, I have my Xfce menu fully tweaked so that the panel 1 is at the top like spectr with 10 workspaces labeled similarly and the menu and whisker menu launcher at the upper right corner, and the panel two is hidden vertically at the upper right corner with a second whisker menu, and it's "favorites" category contains all the audio apps.

Then I also have Xfce keystrokes configured to open lots of applications, along with cortile installed and configured. So Airedale-Studio is pretty nice. I should start with an Airedale-rc10-RT and build a custom 08layer for it also. Once that's running we can do the same for hyprland, once I figure it out.

edit: here it is on my dual monitor studio setup:

These names do get quite long. I was having names like "KLV-Airedale-RT-pwJ-Studio-multi-instance03"

I decided that Spectr-Studio-rc2 should be sufficient, as the added applications and window manager configs will work over a variety of kernels.

To be clear, what @rockedge suggested I do is simply add a layer 08AudioWhatever.sfs on top of an existing 07rootfs.sfs layer. And that works nicely, as @rockedge's happy accident shows. And because the KLVs are essentially the same under the hood, everything that's not window manager specific like menus and keybindings, should work if added as a layer. In other words, building an 08layer with applications, desktop files, utility scripts, and gtk/icons from a KLV will work on all other Void based kennel linuxes, provided they are all more or less up to date and contain the same audio architecture.

@rockedge, This has me thinking we could do a lot more with layers.

For instance we could have a selection of layers available for download and some scripts with icons and desktop files to add features. It would be pretty simple, just a wget script that downloads the sfs to the install directory, and then instructs to reboot for changes to take effect.

Removing it with a script from a running system might be trickier. i'm not sure how that would work.

So in the menu there could be some options in system or accessories category:

Add 08Airedale pro-audio package
Add 09Airedale themes package
Add 10airedale compiling package

Though all these being underneath upper_changes might conflict with the package manager somehow, but maybe not, because any system updates done in upper_changes woulld overwrite with more recent files and shouldn't conflict, unless updates themselves would break things.

If done carefully most of these layers could work for every KLV, awesome, bspwm, hyprland, airedale, spectr.

No, this idea won’t work, each distribution has its own individual settings, and I configure the same program differently for each of them :ugeek:

I agree, at this time I think there would be some wobbly behavior adding the layers. I already had some weird update problems which were resolved by deleting the upper_changes and starting the system fresh with the 08 SFS layer.

In general I like the idea and envisioned this being a possibility...... We would need testing testing testing.....

@Sofiya I have your SFS installed and so far looks and works great! :thumbup2:

I like this wallpaper, I think it would be a good Standard Airedale welcome wallpaper.

These icons I like because they aren't overly flat, cartoony, or rainbow colored, etc. They blend well with lots of gtk themes and backgrounds.

Also that ChromeOS-Oceanic-darker gtk them rides the fence between dark and cheery. It functions well also with all applications.

As far as a theme layer goes, it should work with all KLVs if it only contains the BeautySolar icons, and the ChomesOS gtk theme. There shouldn't be any package manager or config issues I would think.

The same could be said for an Audio layer if pipewire-jack and pipewire-pulse were all configured the same. It would simply be those additions plus audio applications and desktop files.

I'm tempted to add these icons and themes to Hyprland, if there are no objections? They look impressive ;)
I noticed that all the old themes are installed on Hyprland, but the new ones are not. The old themes were much better than those that are now in the repo

@Sofiya I have run into an ownership mismatch. /root is owned by weedog:weedog after booting with the 08KLV-airedale-Settings-rc2.sfs in place, which causes things to break. I fixed it in upper_changes with:

Code: Select all

chown -R root:root /root

On the safe side I also did

Code: Select all

chown -R spot:spot /home/spot
chown -R weedog:weedog /home/weedog

Now Firefox will start normally.

We should run the commands on the un-squashed SFS and squash it again with the correct ownerships :ugeek:

If these ISOs and such are somewhere convenient, I will test and report OOTB behaviors.

I am noticing references to older ISO filenames with these new additional features. Is there a way to distinguish which are old and which is new when the filenames released are the same?
