Package Management for Puppy Linux Distros

Post by Clarity »

In the past, PETs was the built-in way of adding support to a WoofCE distro. Things have changed in these modern times. There was a comment to a post about packages, today, as well as an announcement in a new forum distro in package handling. Viewing all of this in the forum kennel, prompted me to draw this attention.

To date, there are no less than 4 package-managers in use for PUPs, WoofCE PUPs, Remasters, and Project distros built from WoofCE. This does not take into account of the likes of Flats, Apps, VPM, APT, or etc to add functionality to an existing forum distro.

The 4 home-grown package-managers are:

  1. Original PPM (@dimkr)

  2. @scottman's "PKG"

  3. @mistfire's "PKG2"

  4. @BarryK's improved "PKGget" for WoofQ-WoofV

Questions

  • Which is used, preferred, or recommended for use in the modern WoofCE PUPs?

  • Is any of these considered to be universal?

  • Which might be considered "best for all Puppyland offerings"?
