Now started testing S15Pup64 22.11-RC2
Update of PPM database seemed to all go OK
I think adding gtk-3 is a good idea. I loaded devx and did a test compile of transmission-3.00 which is gtk-3 only. It did compile OK but there were missing icons because I think you need to add adwaita-icon-theme unless there is some other way of making sure that gtk-3 has all the icons it needs??
I installed adwaita-icon-theme via PPM which fixed everything. Took a few minutes to install because it has so many files and unfortunately it does add quite a bit of size, but not sure if cut-downs or alternatives can be used.
Also not sure if you might want to have some initial config in a /etc/gtk-3.0/settings.ini file:-

for example displays icons in drop-down menus
EDIT:- In other Pups it looks like the PMaterial icon theme is being used. Hopefully it has everything necessary and adwaita is not then needed

Still not getting WIFI hardware detected to use.

On this computer still get this error:

WIFI hardware is USB adapter that uses the mt76x2u driver.

Maybe the above /etc/gtk-3.0/settings.ini is OK
I booted a fresh S15Pup and installed that file, then installed a .pet of the transmission-3.00 which I compiled yesterday. There are no missing icons

As I understand it, gtk3 always uses adwaita-icon-theme as default/fallback if any required icon is not found in a defined gtk-icon-theme-name so if defining "Puppy Standard" or even "PMaterial" the hope is that those themes have everything needed if adwaita is not present, but the full adwaita is going to be largely a waste of space, so it is something to consider and keep an eye on. Others will know more than me but I think some of the folks have been working on those Puppy icon themes to make sure everything needed is available.

@peebee you might smile at this: Your recent ISO file booting (launched from SG2D) found the prior save by allowing it to automatically start from S15's boot Menu. IT automatically found the prior session saved on the system drive in the Sessions folder as it raced to the desktop. Upon arrival with ALL of the prior session contents, .... doing nothing except a simple desktop click, @ETP's Chrome (which failed in prior release) launched to desktop....nothing done by me. The browser works as expected.

So, I used PPM to remove the browser, reran @ETP' Get Chrome Browser and all worked as usually from past experiences.

You are a master and this distro is fascinating!

The new PPM interface is very nice: But, (THIS is not a bug) the initial screen remains after entering the man PUP's PPM screen. I think, it should disappear when the main PPM screen emerges rather that to drift around on the screen. This is the screen that pops up.

Beyond that; Very nice work coming out of all the work everyone is doing in WoofCE world. THANKS!

Edit: I reported about a preliminary PPM window opening offering to install browser Menu app OR open PPM that hung around after the main PPM window opened. Subsequent use of Menu>Setup>PPM does NOT open that pre.inary window. Its gone. This is NOT a bug report but rather an observation of the new behavior of this new WoofCE distro.

Next: I will do a pristine boot (pfix=RAM) and revisit to see if the prior version issues reported are resolved in this version.

Results: Pristine reboot. All prior issues resolved.

Tried that new fdrv.sfs

Still no WIFI, getting the same error.

In fact, this fdrv caused some other issues i was not having before.
Mainly mouse issues with working and pointer movement on the screen.

There must be something else missing in this fdrv, besides having the correct firmware for the WIFI USB adapter.

For sure, I can swap the fdrv.sfs with the one made for Fossapup64 9.6
Everything just works.
No issues at all.

I'm finding the 26mb one I've used for nearly 2 years is missing more & more, so I abandoned the wish to minimise & released a 44.5mb one with my latest kernel today - is basically rockedge's fossapup-9.6 one with a few very old intel drivers removed (I have his permission to release it). Peebee and me are trying to figure out why, making sure the needed firmware is in the S15Pup fdrv, is not fixing the issue, I am having with WIFI hardware.

There must be something else, we are not seeing, that is needed, that is provided in the Fossapup64 9.6 fdrv.

Any ideas?

45 MB is super small, the woof-CE kernel I use has a 90 MB fdrv. The code that builds fdrv is adjusted as users report about missing support for some hardware.

@bigpup - I think you need mt7622pr2h.bin & maybe the 3 x 7615 .bin files. They are in the 45mb fdrv, which you have shown to work. Only way to test is to use the bigger fdrv & remove .bin files one at a time til you break it.

The fdrv needed 2 files and a directory in /lib/firmware

1. mediatek directory with the files in it. (mt7622pr2h.bin is one of the files in this directory)
Also in this directory is a mt7610u.bin file that may be needed. The wifi chip is suppose to be a mt7610u

2. mt7662.bin file

3. mt7662_rom_patch.bin file

Best I can figure out.
The mt7662.bin file is first used, but the mt7662_rom_patch.bin does something to it to make it work.

I removed only the mt7662.bin file and it no longer worked.

Put it back and it works again.

I just took the frdrv that comes in S15Pup64-22.11-RC2 and added these 3 to the /lib/firmware

From helping people try to get WIFI working, especially with new or almost new computers and new USB WIFI adapters.

Firmware for the WIFI hardware, seems to always be the answer to get it working.

So, the more firmware you can provide, the better!

Let me make a request too if I may.
Please include the non-free broadcom wl kernel module.
Broadcom wifi is very popular and used in many laptop brands.
Most Debian based distribution automatically compile and install the driver, if needed, without the need of extra download. So you can connect to the internet immediately, without needing another machine or extra steps.
(Unfortunately vanillaDpup does not, although v10 has most of the required mechanisms in its sizable 750MB ISO)
Slackware distribution do not have that as far as I know and the driver must be compiled for every kernel
In the past peebee was very good in providing this driver.
Maybe it can included in the S15RC iso too.
Fatdog has a mechanism to install the driver without user input. You nay want to take a look on the how.

Dear ozsouth, thank you for your offer.
The point I was trying to make though is that the driver should be installed automatically even if the user does not know that (s)he needs it.

Failing to get into the internet out-of-the-box makes a very bad impression and in an environment with so many linux (and puppy’ish) distributions, the new user is not going to give it a second chance I am afraid.

Hello! Using S15Pup64, both in Overlayfs mode and in AUFS mode!
Tested the S15Pup64-RC2, in AUFS mode with devx_S15Pup64_22.11.sfs. Successfully compiled kernel 6.0.7. For me, the operating system is the engine that will run the 12 Gb of linux applications in ROXapps format and the 12 Gb of Win32 applications from my old WindowsXP, installed in PortableApps format, on the HD.
The S15Pup64 is perfectly fulfilling this function! Congratulations, Peebee!

Retiredt00 never identifies his Broadcom model, so it's impossible to know why he needs wl.

In fact, many Puppy users will find that their Broadcom wifi works OOTB with the in-kernel b43 driver because the matching b43 firmware is already present in their fdrv module.

I'm sorry to report that the extra firmware did not make any difference for the BCM4360 wifi card in my laptop.

I think would be more useful if dynamic kernel module support is activated. All major distributions have it by default and google search revealed a dkms slackbuild at https://slackbuilds.org/repository/15.0 ... ment/dkms/
Might worth looking at implementing it

Yes, Retiredt00, great idea. Add weight and complexity to all Puppys so that you won't have to identify the Broadcom model you actually need.
