Whither the Light browser?

I find this Light Browser quite useful, been using it for the past few days. You will have a problem with very new developed sites like Facebook but in general it works well. I checked if I could get it going on an old puppy like Racy and could with a very small glibc 2.20 upgrade (not the huge battleshooter upgrade on the Racy dedicated site), newer libstdc+++6 and libatomic libraries. . Maybe a mention of this on the dedicated Racy site? Useful.

That could be problematic, Nic. Stuart (tuxtoo) who put the Racy site together with some assistance from yrs truly, hasn't been seen for well over a year. I'll see if I can dig his email out & drop him a line, though I'm NOT hopeful.

He's always only ever been a very occasional visitor to the forum. We'll see.

Maybe we should start some "nostalgic" threads for every, official release of old Puppy with links to whatever/wherever may be of interest (and added information). Also maybe upload the useful files on that unmanned site to another source like mega.nz

We could look into just creating repo directories and with some Apache configuration make them perform as such. Or maybe there is a some type of repo software we can set up next to the forum, oldforum and Wiki to do the task. We can then give FTP access to these repo directories with dedicated accounts.

It is an idea I have pondered for some time. It seems do-able, and can be maintained by using the FTP access which would be so configured that the rest of the Puppy Linux software is untouched by repo activity.

Uh-huh. It's an idea, Erik, but I can't help wondering if we're creating "over-redundancy" if we follow that route, y'know?

Case in point:-

Any 'personal' repo that still has 'active' links is going to still function. Moreover, surely you would need to get permission from the 'owner' of that repo before mirroring everything? I've NO idea how Ally handles this.

Inactive repos are going to be irrecoverable, I would think.

And of course, Ally himself has mirrored just about everything WORTH mirroring already. How were you thinking of doing this; creating yet another all-inclusive mirror, along the lines of what Ally's already done? Or just specific stuff? (As far as I can tell, Ally's already mirrored my G.Drive and MediaFire repos; I don't know whether he's caught up with the relatively new MEGA.nz one yet...)

Yes that may warrant a look at. Rockedge - another suggestion. I like this idea of making a reply without quoting and just typing @rockedge eg. saves space and in many cases not really necessary to quote the post you are replying to anyway. Now - I was thinking if there is not an easier way of doing this because it's a litlle bit of a hassle, you type the @name and then give it the colours so it looks nicer. Don't know if possible but maybe another reply option, so instead of clicking the quote button we may have another button and if clicked will open the reply box but without the quoted text AND have the reply @name in say red already there without you having to type it. Is this possible?

@amethyst That's a pretty good idea. The Simple Mention function activated with "@" shortcut and typing the user name which appears colored red after it is selected or [mention]amethyst[/mention] as shortcode. This function also creates a notification for the user mentioned. Perhaps adding a type of quote "less" button that will just take the author's name and adds it with the [mention][/mention] shortcode in the new reply post editor. Might be able to modify and add the necessary PHP code to do it. Maybe a plugin extension exists, which I will look into as well.

Have you worked with the "quote" button on the post tools menu? It works in a similar way to your suggestion, but also with more manual adjustments.

I've found that using this browser (and probably also applicable to any other browser) that after some usage I notice that things seem to be downloading randomly which I suppose could be updates of sorts. So I've checked about:config and searched "update". Remarkable how many things can actually be updated. Changed all the true settings to false, changed the timesettings to something ridiculous and also changed the url source addresses for the different updates to about:config (you can probably leave it blank too). This has sorted this random downloads. Think I'm going to do this with my other browsers too.

I am using it for my chosen flash content as it still runs my flash player just fine.

Those downloads are probably requests from the google safe browsing which i assume light is using.I tend to do the same as you and block the downloads.

I have tailored the light browser with some old firefox complete themes just like the proper firefox looked like years ago.

Also - disable this automatic page thumbnail "generation".
