Peculiar message when updating Brave browser

Post by Governor »

In case anyone is interested.

Code: Select all

root# ./UpdateBrave
Update brave-portable to latest version...

Could not find the version installed
Continue installing latest version anyway?
Are you sure to continue installation? (Enter=yes) (Y/n)?

So the update is not working exactly as intended, but is otherwise working just fine. Kudos to the programmer for catching this possibility and including the explanatory message.
Thanks!

Distro: fossapup64 9.5
Window Manager: JWM v2.4.0
Desktop Start: xwin jwm
Firefox portable: 115.5.0esr (64-bit)

The UpdateBrave script is part of the Brave 'Portable' project from mikewalsh viewtopic.php?p=59662#p59662
You should run it from inside the Brave-portable64 directory, not on its own (as I think you do, but I could be wrong).

Using Rox, I go to the directory where the LAUNCH script is located, which in my case, is here:.
/mnt/nvme0n1p4/Brave browser/Brave-portable64/Brave-portable64/LAUNCH

I then right click on the open space in the file manager, choose 'Window', and then choose 'Terminal Here'.

Am I in the wrong place?

You did correct. But I only get the message "Could not find the version installed... " if I do not have a 'PROFILE' folder (yet), that is created when running LAUNCH first time.
After first time launching Brave, the update script should detect the version and either say that you have newest version already, or if not, it will update without yes/no prompt (well that's how it works for me).

I get the same result no matter how many times I have run the LAUNCH script. It is also the same result if Brave is running or not.
Just one of those 'quirks', I guess.

Do other configuration changes to brave persist between boots?

Not sure what you mean with 'between boots', it's supposed to be a portable application that doesn't rely on rebooting.

I don't like 'quirks' Something is probably wrong with you setup @Governor, don't know what though, is Brave version updated correctly afterwards ? (see at Help > About Brave, in Brave).
Anyone can reproduce the same as @Governor ?
Actually this should be discussed in the Brave-Portable topic: viewtopic.php?t=6150, so I'd suggest to continue there.

Hmm, just guessing here, but it appears you have a Brave sub-directory of another Brave sub-directory??? I don't know if this is the proper
design or not, or if something went awry with the installation. If it were me, I'd move the contents of the /Brave browser/Brave-portable64/Brave-portable64 to
/Brave browser/Brave-portable64 then run the "Launch" script, create a profile, then try the update again.
