Refocusing the presentation of Puppy Linux

Post by sonny »

Moving forward, can we design a modular BookwormPup that
is barebones, OS-only, but has a large number of drivers?
Just like this modular PSU, just 'plug in' or install the apps
we NEED.

Dogs and Puppies love bare'bones', don't they?

@sonny, I think this is helpful with most incoming or present members to the forum; namely a reasonably feature set of expected packages that are within the framework of PUPs of the past. Its a consistent delivery and addresses the majority of user expectations in a Linux distro.

AS you may already know, there is several means built-in to PUPs that afford removals/replacements/upgrades/changes of things that come with the distros presented on the forum.

I am not disagreeing that some of the developers present distro they feel are designed such that usability is to be added by those who are great at using the terminal to expand or remove controls in a deliverable, but most of the forum user, and there are many of us with varied needs, find the current deliverable distros adequate for addressing their needs along with the many members who stand-by to help when users raise questions.

I dont mean this post in opposition, as that is not my aim. It just something to think about looking over the PLDF landscape.

i.e.
BookwormPup32 + full list of pets (and dependencies) to download separately.
BookwormPup64 + full list of pets (and dependencies) to download separately.
No unused or useless apps (minimum bloat)

There is no one-size-fits-all.

There is no bloat in forum distros. It is the creation from years of experiences in presenting a reasonable delivery.

None of what I have seen in my few years on this forum accounts to bloat. Developers are NOT floating bloat in forum distros, IMHO.

Can you give some examples?

@sonny I think I need to apologize for my posts as after looking over the thread, I think you are asking for something different than what typical developers here delivered for general use.

I believe you feel that a general use distro is not a way to go. I am sure that even that perspective is not accurate, too.

So here is an idea maybe helpful: I am aware of 5 distinct "forum Linux Builder" utilities spread across the various sub-area of this forum. The ones I am aware of are:

  • WoofCE via GIT where one can tweak before building their distro

  • DebianDOG and other DOG builders on the forum where in a screen one pre-select the contents one desires

  • KL's builder scripts that the developers publish and can be tweaked before running

  • FATDOG's builder

  • BarryK's builders which he continue to keep up to date

  • There may be others

You may be seeking a builder versus a general use distro.

Again, I am not a mind reader, and I could be wrong on this, as well. And if so, I apologize.

Not sure if any of this is helpful.

I don't use most apps preinstalled with FossaPup64-9.5 but ROX, Terminal,
Palemoon, mpv, mtPaint, Geany, and PPM. I only install what and when I need.
I just want an 'everyday' car, not 'James Bond's' car.
