KLV-Airedale-rc2 the Release Candidate 2 is Available!

Post by rockedge »

KLV-Airedale-rc2
Kennel Linux Void Airedale Release Candidate 2 733 MiB download size
KLV-Airedale-rc2
SHA1-MD5.txt

Upgraded to a new version of @fredx181 's save2flash, and set LANG=en_US.UTF-8 in /etc/environment as default localization.

Thanks to @Sofiya for the poorercputemp and Display Control packages that also have been added to desktop.

  • Grub4Dos is now included in the System menu. Making KLV-Airedale capable of setting up a boot-able device using GParted and Grub4Dos.

  • CUPS starting as a service has been added and is working thanks to @rcrsn51 spotting missing components!

This is constructed from KLV-Airedale-beta24->beta25->beta26->beta27 and with a custom Debian kernel version 6.0.0-5 SMP PREEMPT DYNAMIC made with fredx181's script that will create a Debian derived kernel for KLV. Also has had a system wide upgrade. Uses an initrd.gz based on the FirstRib skeleton initrd.gz configured by the kernel/module creation script. Firmware SFS is from a woof-CE kernel-kit built huge 6.0.0-1 kernel which is modified by @radky for the distro F96_4-radky2. This firmware SFS is around 20 MiB bigger in size than the original but has a larger selection.

Also included is wiak's generate boot stanzas script. fredx181's mksplash has a menu entry and the remaster script is installed.

With the addition of a xfce4 desktop tiling configuration. A tip from @wiak for configuring Tiling windows done with the Super (Windows) key and an up, down, left, right, home, pgup, pgdown or end key.

gxmessage in the default rootfs.

save2flash has been expanded to handle persistence on FAT32 and NTFS partitions.
The mksplash GUI utility to create splash notification banners.

The latest initrd.gz brings vFat and NTFS formatted partition support to KLV, allowing persistence on NTFS/vFat systems as well as the usual /ext2/ext3/ext4/swap support.

  • included htop, Grub4Dos, CUPS

  • created a symlink /root/spot with the target /home/spot

  • Auto login cleaned up.

  • includes also the logout logic provided by fredx181 gives true mulit-user support.

  • replaced loop.cfg to the most recent modifications.

  • Debian kernel 6.0.0-3-KLV SMP PREEMPT DYNAMIC is used.

  • added gtkhash

Plus the other important improvements contributed by the KLV team.

Added @fredx181's save2flash utility that can be used when KLV is started in RAM2 mode to perform session saves on demand for persistence.
This is similar to PUPMODE13 in Puppy Linux.

fredx181's swap partition enable script includes the latest revisions and also added are the packages

  • mime-add-1.0_0.noarch.xbps

  • edit-sfs-1.0_0.noarch.xbps

KLV-Airedale-beta25 is able to load squash SFS packages on the fly or during the boot sequence.
Squash files and ISO images can be opened from the file manager and the read the contents.

  • can run with rootfs, 01fimware and 00module SFS files as uncompressed directories.

  • Also able to load compressed and/or decompressed directories,
once a 2 digit prefix is added to the file name.

  • It is possible to mix using compressed squash files and uncompressed directories.

Also can be downloaded from https://rockedge.org/kernels in ISO->Kennel_Linux->Airedale

I downloaded and copied RC-2 into my install, then I ran a system update, wondering if my numbered upper_changes would play nice, and it seems to be going well. It was a fairly big update involving some python3.11 libraries.

Nice having the cpu temp and good ol' display control again.

I want to ask you how to clear /var/cache/xbps/
Clear XBPS cache does not clear

@Sofiya I manually delete all of the files in /var/cache/xbps. Cache clearing and orphaned file removal with xbps-remove -Oo
does not clear /var/cache/xbps so I do it by hand.

@Sofiya We will have to work out the correct permissions and configuration to start it from root. Might need add some things to have the pulseaudio daemon be shared or start a new instance. Don't know yet. Might be able to set SUID bit on either the equalizer or for the daemon.

I tried some time ago to get the equalizer going but put it aside until now. Should be relatively easy to fix.

it seems to me that with this behavior of the equalizer, both the browser and programs that run with the sound like "sudo -u spot firefox" will not have sound

This is the problem developers (and thus users) face when running desktop as root user - a lot of system components are designed to run from expected perspective of non-root user on the desktop.

I have a problem myself, related to that. I am fond of using crond (cronie package installed) to keep a more detailed eye on my laptop battery charging (script that gives me notifications to both plug-in and plug-out at set max and min limits). However, I discovered that when running as root user one of the two commands I use to warn me doesn't work when running as root user - that command being 'notify-send' which is supposed to flash up a warning icon on the screen but doesn't when script activated by crond crontab condition:

Code: Select all

notify-send -u critical -i "notification-battery-low" "Plug in Charger!"

and

Code: Select all

notify-send -u critical -i "notification-battery-low" "Remove Charger!"

No problem with the sound notification I use though:

Code: Select all

paplay /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo/suspend-error.oga

The notify-send lines work fine if I run the script manually, but not when I run it via crond...

Fortunately, I have found others had same problem, and though still to try it may have solution, or at least a clue, from that: https://unix.stackexchange.com/question ... rs-as-root

Perhaps there are similar (tricky) dbus-related issues with the pa equalizer problem.

I had hoped that instead of using notify-send the following might work, but still doesn't when script triggered by crond. Weird...

Code: Select all

gxmessage -borderless -center -bg orange -timeout 3 "Remove that old Charger!"

Maybe indeed also something to do with $XAUTHORITY; I have no idea... Script works fine as run via crontab control on non-root user desktop in my Zorin lite install. Further investigation just using gxmessage warranted though.

Looks like I will be able to modify my battery warning script to work though; that script given as solution above works fine when triggered from crontab by crond.

As it turns out I managed to get above to work without involving dbus at all...

A cron job runs as the user of the crontab being used to trigger whatever you want to run. However, though thus running as user root for my crontab -e configuration in KLV-airedale, crond runs in its own environment that does not know which DISPLAY to use for any X apps being called up. So to get notify-send to work it was a simply matter of saying what DISPLAY to use via changing above to:

Code: Select all

DISPLAY=:0 notify-send -u critical -i "notification-battery-low" "Remove Charger!"

So that is an important result to remember if anyone ever trying to start a GUI application using cron. So could also use the likes of

Code: Select all

DISPLAY=:0 gxmessage -borderless -center -bg orange -timeout 3 "Remove Charger!"

Having said that, I will experiment further with the dbus method since that didn't require knowledge of which DISPLAY was in use (but did involve a search of dbus statistics though). None of this may be behind pa equalizer issues, mind you, which I haven't myself tried, but then again dbus matters might be (and always need to determine user and permissions situation regarding any resource prior to trying to use it).

doesn't want to run with

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
## pulseaudio --start

# start a D-Bus session bus for both root and spot, for PulseAudio and applications that don't work without it
sudo -u spot dbus-launch --exit-with-x11 > /tmp/.spot-session-bus

# start PulseAudio over the session bus and use it for both root and spot, so they see the same output devices
if [ -e /usr/bin/pulseaudio ]; then
    sudo -u spot sh -c "pulseaudio --kill > /dev/null 2>&1; pulseaudio --start --log-target=syslog"
    export PULSE_SERVER=unix:/tmp/runtime-spot/pulse/native
    export PULSE_COOKIE=/home/spot/.config/pulse/cookie
fi

my dreams of having an equalizer are shattered :)

@Sofiya I manually delete all of the files in /var/cache/xbps. Cache clearing and orphaned file removal with xbps-remove -Oo
does not clear /var/cache/xbps so I do it by hand.

So I'm assuming by what I've read so far that clearing out /var/cache/xbps of all it's contents is perfectly safe, nothing there is needed, and that if I go back through my numbered upper_changes and do the same that there aren't any potential pitfalls. My current upper_changes has 710MB of files in it, so I think I could slim down my overall system quite a bit, especially since I installed lilypond docs a few upper_changes ago, which was rather large, and the compressed files are in the cache.

Booted KLV vRC2 ISO file without issue on bare-metal via SG2D and QEMU.

Operations are smooth and swift for current testing. Thanks for all the contributions that continue to be made as this matures.

You're one version behind, brother! RC-3 uses the void kernel and it's snappy fast.
