Re: Slackware AutoStart X as good as Puppy

Lol, y'all are cracking me up. Ok, not specific answers, but certainly some good vents/rants  which I get. I started Gentoo, did Ubuntu, FreeBSD, then Puppy. Then soooo many puppy's! but hadn't done Slack. Oh well, so far it looks like it may be easiest just too 'root', then 'startx' as I h...

Re: Slackware AutoStart X as good as Puppy

That boots me to xdm, then it wants me to login as something other than root. I would use xdm to automatically boot xfce cause I think u can do that, but I can't get past that. Ideas?

Slackware AutoStart X as good as Puppy

Ok, on this one PC, I just tried out slackware, 'cause I hadn't used it before. How do I get it to let me login when it says 'darkstar:' and I type root, then startx, but do all that automatically? All Slackware sites are big on OH WOW DON'T RUN AS ROOT! even though I've run puppy as root for like 8...

Modprobe Error at Boot

Good morning! I get lots of red text at boot. Something to the effect of "Loading intel_ishtp_loadermodprobe. intel_ishtp_loader: no such device." Then a bunch more red text, then Pausing 60 Seconds. Then more red and something like "Loading intel_ishtp_hidmodprobe. intel_ishtp_hid: n...

Re: Can't Change icon Theme

I went to this site https://packages.debian.org/buster/amd64/lxappearance/download and downloaded the deb file, used pextract and opened and saved it as a dirrectory, changed the name of the bin application to lxappearance_old and changed the name of the desktop file *_old, then ran dir2pet from ter...

Re: Can't Change icon Theme

Good morning! Trying to change the icon theme. I click on Change Appearance icon (also tried it from terminal running lxappearance), then Icon Set. When I select an icon theme in the list (it does show the themes I installed) but it doesn't change the theme and just restarts the window manager. Wha...

Menu --> Desktop --> JWMDeskmanager

click on Icon Theme there are several listed and at the bottom access to more themes.

That works for jwm but this is LXDE desktop in this category, so it is a different one.

Re: Can't Change icon Theme

I can change the theme by manually editing the desktop.conf file and saving it. But was hoping there was a more streamlined method.

Re: Weird Executable Issue

As is regularly the case, I was doing it wrong. LXDE says right click the menu entry and select Add to Desktop for each item. That seems to take care of the executable issue with LXDE. There is more to investigate, but that mostly fixes it.

Thanks!

It appears your distro is using LXDE as a desktop environment. This behavior is controlled by the desktop. Here is their help forum: https://forum.lxde.org/index.php Most puppies use JWM desktop, but someone else around here may have the hack for LXDE. Well, as I mentioned, Fossa using JWM did the ...

Weird Executable Issue in LXDE [SOLVED]

Good morning! I have this weird deal where all executables on my desktop ask me whether or not to execute them. Why? I feel it is permissions thing. I am running from usb, the puppy files are on fat32 while the save folder is on a different partition, ext3, also on flash drive. Any ideas? I also saw...

Re: Desktop icons

As it happens - Paul just asked me the same question the other day. So here is my copied-and-pasted answer. --------- The answer is going to be complicated because there are a few ways to change the icon themes, depending on what "icon theme" you're talking about. This is true on Puppy as...

Re: Cloned Xenial doesn't see Save folder (Solved)

I ran into that myself years ago. There’s a file, *edited* - named fsckme.flg, but it directs Puppy to the location of your save. That file doesn’t move or copy from one partition to another for some reason. I ended up booting into a new save, closing out of it, reboot to ram and then editing the n...

Re: Move Xenial

I figured it out. I converted it to a file from a folder. I booted xenial, created a safe file, a large one ('cause I knew the folder was a few gigs). I then booted something else on it (another puppy, Bionicpup). I opened the new xenial save file (mounted it). I deleted those contents. I copied the...

Cloned Xenial doesn't see Save folder (Solved)

I have moved (copied) xenial 64 from one PC to another. The goal is to have the same system on the new as the old. Xenial boots fine from the new location but doesn't see the save folder (not file) even though the new menu points to the same location. It's like the 'new' xenial looks for a save file...

Re: Desktop icons

I can change specific icons, I can add icons to the desktop, no sweat. I don't know how to change the overall icon THEME. In JWM one could change all the icons by changing the theme and you would have a whole different set of icons, one click. I am trying to figure out how to do that regularly. 😉

Update: Fatdog for the win, found wifi out of the box. For windows have to make sure Fastboot is off or windows tries to keep control of wifi even when not in Windows. Excellent, all! I did move some firmware there but I didn't quite know which one. Gonna move that one in there for bionicpup64 and what happens. No WiFi on Dell Inspiron / Bionicpup

Hello again! One of the major bonuses of Puppy is if there are a ton of issues one can just regroup and try another Puppy. Per a great suggestion via Facebook I ditched Fossa and am now using Bionicpup and it screams along! BUT CAN'T GET WIFI GOING. So, what do y'all suggest? Playing with firmware m...

Re: New Lappy for a Puppy

Thx, Mike!

I used the exe back in the day before it had a name. Pretty easy but a bit hacky, at the time. May be smoother now.

Run a few dual boots now, but always welcome input, so will post as I do it.

Ok, thx for the post and am still gathering suggestions.

New Lappy for a Puppy

I need advise: what are some of the more modern laptops that I can throw a Puppy on? Background: I've always been the make-the-old-stuff-work guy, but funding is slightly better lately, so I thought I would upgrade. But I've been using some version of Puppy since around 2008. Wanna be able to dual b...
