Re: boot errors at startup, new computer

Check /proc/acpi/wakeup. Although the names are cryptic, if you use a USB look for XHC or EHC(I). Depending on the uniqueness of the computer, your keyboard may no longer work to wakeup the machine if you disable the USB as a wakeup source. If it's a touchscreen generally touching it or pressing the...

Build an up-to-date GTK libraries set. That's the only answer, or find someone who's packaged such libraries.

Re: SD reader not recognized in 64-Xenial

I have a desktop with an SD reader. It is recognized in Windows & 64-Fossa, but in Xenial an SD does not appear recognized as a desktop partition or at terminal. USB & internal partitions are still recognized. I have both Puppy Event Manager -> Icon Handler boxes checked. Am I missing a set...

Re: boot errors at startup, new computer

The issue most likely is trying to load the module results in the module failing, specifically because there is *no* such device. Leave it be. The linux kernel will generally guess right as to what modules are needed. If the module being probed in is because of default configuration, I suppose that ...

Re: Random boot issue?

Greetings again all. Being old school I shutdown every night, and on occasion I have a boot issue. This machine boots really fast with my ssd and 32gb of ram with a frugal install. That being said, once in a while I will see the boot stall when copying the adrive to ram. I have run several live tes...

Re: Which 64-bit Puppy for 2.4 GHz Celeron + 512 MB RAM?

My advice seeing as you're using it for school: chattr +i after installing puppy squashfiles and boot configuration files. This will immediately stop any chance to remove squashfiles somehow or destroy the boot. Also you will need to patch filemnt to not use rm -rf, instead using rmdir. (super bad) ...

It'll either be in Puppy Package Manger (PPM) or is a squash file. You can unload it via the sfs load on the fly entry in the menu, under utility.

Re: Cannot connect eth0 (RealTek RTL8168/8111 PCI-E Gigabit) in Fossapup64 9.5

Linux has and does include proprietary blobs/drivers. Realtek for instance provides their source which you can build against the kernel tree (see quickpet to obtain said source). Usually the drivers load in the 'firmware' or blob in order to work with it. You may find that some drivers involve rever...

Re: In 'make' - what constitutes a dependency?

The placeholder variables, refer to the already, most likely set variables in the system. If its not usually the 'configure' script can do this. It is a dependency, just like how you need make in order to intepret the Makefile. Usually when we talk about dependencies we're not talking about the comp...

I'd suggest making sure that you were already booted and using the savefile. As well, it may help to see /var/log/messages or dmesg. It could have also incorrectly suspended itself (and alas never woke up again).

You'd think I'd know how by now, but things change so much over the years, so I'm going to ask about Puppy installation for my wife's computer. It's an Acer laptop similar to mine in the sig. It has UEFI and Win7 installed on sda3. She had been using it with Tahrpup32 for a few years with a CD boot...

The linux terminology calls it a virtual terminal. An actual terminal is just what you see in a virtual terminal, except it takes up the entire display usually.

Access the URL I mentioned and look up memory. Disable the one that says cache.memory.enable.
You should try using Palemoon instead.

Most things are available in the sense that you don't care about the time required/spent. Some however are written with code that doesn't work with 32bit, but that's rare. However since 32bit has been phased out, you got your work cut out for you to build everything you want and tracking down all th...

Re: Screen doesn't turn on after closing laptop lid for a few minutes

You may try using cat /proc/acpi/wakeup to see if something happens to be disabled as a wakeup device. (In this case, everything)
To enable one of the devices, you write echo <device name> > /proc/acpi/wakeup If you use a USB, please do not enable XHC or EHC or USB.

Re: UEFI and booting from USB

The USB since it is removable, will not have a permanent entry no matter what you do. Best you can do is install rEFInd and set it as the bootloader via the steps provided at https://rodsbooks.com/refind/installing.html. Then if you happen to plug in the USB after it boots up all you have to do is p...
