Re: Chromium - 32 & 64 bit - runs-as-spot

Bull's eye. Knocking compton upside the head set Chromium free. Mr Walsh, thank you for kindly directing me to that thread. Thanks also to HerrBert, mikeslr, xenial, thinkpadfreak, and all the rest of the pupperazi who helped solve the mystery. Thanks again also to Peebee, for the Bionic64-friendly ...

Re: Chromium - 32 & 64 bit - runs-as-spot

An update on this. Peebee, thanks for the Alien Bob repackage. It worked beautifully for me on a bare pfix=ram Bionic. Unfortunately I couldn't get it to work when I had the save folder loaded. Presumably it didn't like something else that I had installed. It opened the browser window, but any time ...

Re: Chromium - 32 & 64 bit - runs-as-spot

Hello Peebee. Thanks for packaging these programs. Regrettably versions 99 and 101 are failing for me on Bionic 64. After converting and installing on the fly I get the following errors: /opt/chromium-browser/chrome: /lib64/libpthread.so.0: version `GLIBC_2.30' not found (required by /opt/chromium-b...

Re: how to install BP32 on Asus eeePC 701 4G?

Hi Stingwan, I've tried out a pile of non-PAE Linux distributions lately, looking for one that would work with an AMD K6 (the OS sees it as a fast i486). Without wanting to get into a big discussion about the rationale, I've found that modern Linux is close to abandoning really old hardware (somethi...

Re: BionicPup32 NONPAE (AMD K6 Update)

An update on progress with this experiment, mostly for anyone else keen to try. To review, I'm tinkering with a couple of veteran Super 7 boards with AMD K6-2 processors, one 300 MHz and one 500 MHz. The idea is to answer the question: Q: "Are these arthritic old guys are still useful with a mo...

Re: BionicPup32 NONPAE

Thanks, Rockedge, downloaded to check out. I'm surprised that you needed a non-PAE kernel for a 2002 T42. What processor does it have? Thinkwiki says that all but the slowest T42s had a Dothan Pentium M processor, which has PAE. The 1.5 GHz T42s had a Banias, which I've read will boot with a PAE ker...

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I wonder if the OP is having trouble with this Internet Archive download: https://archive.org/details/bionicpup3219.03k3.18.138nonpae The ISO from that link won't work for me either. It's not a massive pain for going online if you don't use Google. Who needs them? I agree with 666PhilB, Disroot is a worthy Gmail replacement. It's doing well for me so far. It speaks POP3 and IMAP with no Oauth requirement. It's free, claims to be volunteer-run, gives you 2 gb of online file stora...

Re: What's happened to Puppy?

Good point, Rufwoof. I was a Unix SA in the 1980s, and back then, every kernel was specifically built for its hardware. If you upgraded the hardware, you at least had to link new drivers into the kernel. Today's Linux kernels packed with modprobed drivers are convenient, but they carry a price that'...

Steve said: "I once did a comparison of Bionic 32 and 64, booted up Bionic32, went to a website, and it was using approx 520Mb of RAM. Shut that down, booted Bionic64, went to exactly the same website and it was using nearer 900Mb of RAM." Steve, could that be at least partly because they ...

Re: What's happened to Puppy?

I'm a tad surprised to read recommendations to run old dogs on modern pig-iron. A few weeks ago I tried to boot 4.31 and 5.25 on a 2017-vintage board just added to my stable, but those dogs wouldn't hunt. IIRC the oldest pup that would bark for me was Trusty Tahr, but I might be remembering wrong. I...

Indeed! Congrats on your new HP speeder there. Sounds like fun! Still hanging in here with mostly early- to late-aughts hardware. I suppose it's heresy, but now that Moore's Law has been effectively repealed, the main reasons for new hardware seem to be a need for the utmost speed - IIRC you do vide...

Just checked out the Slimjet portable. You, Mr Walsh, should be wearing a cloak and carrying a wand, because you're surely a Puppy wizard. Re: Slimjet-portable : 32- and 64-bit - v32.0.2.0

Has anyone in this thread actually gotten *any* version of Slimjet-32 to work with Tahr-32? Have tried all 32-bit portable versions from slimjetbrowser.com, from 20 to 32. Zilch. They need GTK3, no problem; easy to install from PPM. Some also need --single-process command line flag in addition to --...

Re: Any SSE browsers that run fast in WINE?

Mike, thanks! I'm trying to help out a friend. I set her up with Tahr 32 bit on a Thinkpad T400 probably about 4-5 years ago, and then she moved overseas, so I haven't been able to do anything with the computer lately. She's OK with installing software, but doesn't want to update to a more recent Pu...

Re: Any SSE browsers that run fast in WINE?

This must be the definition of irony. If your browser is old, and that even seems to include the default Palemoon 28.4.0 in Bionic, mega.nz refuses to allow it to download a new one from the links in this thread. It gripes that - wait for it - "Your browser seems a bit outdated. Please update t...

Hi again Mike. I tried your OpenshotQT-portable64 with Openshot 2.4.3. Sorry to say that it acts exactly the same way that the other versions did. Thanks, Mike! I got your file from Google Drive. It looks as if you posted it just about the same time I posted my report on the other tests.

I have to run off for a while now, but I'll check this one out later tonight and report back. Fingers crossed. Thanks again!

Hi Mike! This seems like a good idea. What pup are you using for these? I tried the Openshot 2.6.1 appimage on Bionic 64, but it fell on its face. It flashed something very briefly on the screen (might have been the editor screen but hard to say as it went by VERY fast), dumped a stack trace, and th...

32 bit libodbc in Bionic64

Trying to run an old Win 32 program under Wine (version2013's Wine 5.14) in Bionic 64. The 32 bit compatibility SFS is loaded. Wine griped that it couldn't find libodbc.so, so I installed libodbc1_2.3.4 from PPM, and symlinked libodbc.so.2.0.0 to libodbc.so. Now Wine complains that libodbc.so is the...

Re: Confused puppy

Sorry, I thought it was pretty clear. Wiak got it straight away. I'm sure we're not the only people here who use a dictionary. The Ubuntu naming convention is to use an animal name preceded by an adjective, no? Until Tahr, Ubuntu based pups adopted the Ubuntu adjective for their names. So, our puppi...

Confused by Puppy names

I guess this is another confused pup like Tahrpup was, where instead of following the first-name pattern set by Lucid, Precise, Xenial, and Bionic, and being a loyal Trusty puppy, it was a cross-breeding between a tahr and a dog. Tahr was weird enough, crossing a tahr (goat) with a dog, but now we'r...

Thanks, but a longer search time didn't help here. Pnethood finds Samba shares, but it won't connect to them - it says no permission.
